National Hockey League: first overall draft picks

Several high-profile hockey stars make up this list of first overall selections in the NHL draft. Notoriously missing is Wayne Gretzky "The Great One". Gretzky played for the Indianapolis Racers and the Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association. Edmonton joined the NHL in 1979, thus Gretzky was never actually drafted in the NHL.
